Article: Diamond Grading

Diamond Grading

At Searle & Co Jewellers, we are proud to offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds, giving you the freedom to choose the option that best suits your values, style, and budget. Both types of diamonds are beautiful, durable, and a symbol of lasting love.

Natural Diamonds

  • Formed in the Earth: Natural diamonds were created over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure deep within the Earth’s crust.

  • Unique Story: Each natural diamond is one-of-a-kind, carrying with it a sense of rarity and history.

  • Value & Tradition: They are often prized for their natural origin, making them a popular choice for those seeking tradition and timeless appeal.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

  • Created by Science: Lab-grown diamonds are formed using advanced technology that replicates the natural growth process in controlled laboratory conditions.

  • Identical Properties: Chemically, physically, and optically, they are the same as natural diamonds the difference lies in their origin.

  • Accessible Luxury: Typically, lab-grown diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds of the same size and quality, offering excellent value.

  • Sustainable Choice: Many customers choose lab-grown diamonds for their reduced environmental footprint and modern innovation.

How Diamonds Are Graded (The 4Cs)

All diamonds – natural or lab-grown – are graded using the internationally recognised GIA system, focusing on the “4Cs”:

  1. Cut – The way a diamond is cut affects how it reflects light. A well-cut diamond sparkles brilliantly.

  2. Colour – Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow/brown). Colourless stones are the rarest.

  3. Clarity – Refers to the presence of natural inclusions or blemishes. Graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).

  4. Carat Weight – The measurement of a diamond’s weight, not its size. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable.

Each diamond comes with a GIA certificate (or equivalent, for lab-grown stones) detailing these characteristics, ensuring transparency and confidence in your purchase.

Choosing the Right Diamond for You

Whether you prefer the natural rarity of mined diamonds or the innovative brilliance of lab-grown, the most important factor is finding a stone that reflects your love and personal story. At Searle & Co Jewellers, we’ll guide you through both options, so you can make an informed and confident choice.
